WWE 2K Battlegrounds launching in September with 70 WWE stars

Earlier this year, 2K Sports announced they were going to forgo their annual WWE simulation game in favor of WWE 2K Battlegrounds, an arcade-style brawler that brings out the fun from the WWE in a new way. While not much info was offered during the game’s announcement, 2K is sharing a bunch today.

In a post on the game’s blog, the company announced a release date of September 18, 2020. The game will launch with more than 70 WWE superstars with more to come. The range of stars includes current wrestlers like Roman Reigns, Charlotte Flair, Asuka, Kofi Kingston, and Randy Orton and legends like Andre the Giant, Undertaker, Mankind, Sgt. Slaughter, and more.

The game will have four different modes: Exhibition, where players can have up to 4-player exhibition matches locally or online, Campaign, where players follow the adventure of a WWE hopeful as they compete for a chance at a WWE contract. There’s also King of the Battleground, an online last-man-standing mode where four players start in the ring, with four more players waiting in the wings, challenging you to defeat them all and Online, where players battle it out in online tournaments.

The game will launch with eight different rings and special interactive elements for each, like ringside weapons, or the ability to dive off of helicopters or throw an opponent into the jaws of an alligator.

“We know WWE fans and gamers enjoy a wide variety of experiences, and with WWE 2K Battlegrounds, we’re presenting a whole new dimension through arcade-style gameplay that’s completely different than our WWE 2K simulation franchise," said Chris Snyder, Vice President of Marketing for 2K. "We look forward to seeing everyone tear it up with friends and family in the Battlegrounds.”
