Toby Fox shares more Deltarune details (including how it connects to Undertale)

In an impressively long tweet, Toby Fox, creator of Undertale and its recent follow-up Deltarune, decided to clear up some misconceptions about his new game. What is it? How is it connected to Undertale? And when can we expect more?

You can read his full message here but if you just want a run-down of the most important info, we have a summary for you.

What is Deltarune?

Deltarune is not a sequel or a prequel. Specifically, it is not the world of Undertale according to Fox. None of the events in Deltarune will affect Undertale. Deltarune is a story with different characters that have lived different lives. You can think of it as a sort-of spin-off. While it might have some meta-textual info about Undertale, it won’t affect the plot and outcome of that story in any way.

Most notably, Deltarune is actually a demo. Yes, it’s about as long as Undertale was, but it’s not a full game. It’s not the first chapter of an episodic game either, at least not in the way Telltale would have made it.  This is a look forward into a game that Toby Fox would like to make, but hasn’t yet.

So when is Chapter 2 coming?

That’s tough to say. You see Toby Fox is making this game himself, and considering that Chapter 1 took a few years to make, Toby Fox has decided that making Deltarune is impossible… by himself.

However, it might just be possible if he can get a game design team together. Fox admits he has no experience successfully directing a team and he has no idea who he is going to work with, so this might crash and burn, but he is going to try.

Once he has his team together he will have a greater idea of when Deltarune will be officially released. He also detailed that he plans to release all chapters at once, as a single purchase. In addition, he may make changes to Chapter 1 in the final version. He may also change the battle system around in the final version.

He notes that he will not be doing a Kickstarter or any sort of crowdfunding for Deltarune. He is just going to make a game, release it, and sell it as normal.

Will Chapter 1 get any more content?

If by that you mean the demo, no. What you see is what you get.

Will Deltarune have multiple endings?

According to Fox, no. While the ACT system will remain in the game, “no matter what you do the ending will be the same.”

What platforms will the game release on?

No idea. He will determine that when the game comes out, as he has no idea what generation we will be in.

What inspired Deltarune?

The best way to answer this question is just to share TobyFox's own words:

Thanks for playing my game. I hope you liked it.

For the past 3 years I've been waking up in the middle of the night unable to go back to sleep because I've been thinking about the scenes that happen in the game.

Even though so many details are still hazy,

I really want to show you the things I've been thinking about.

That's really my only reason for making this game.

If I don't show you what I'm thinking, I'll lose my mind.

(It was actually a totally selfish motivation...)

By the way, I was really worried at first about making this.

The expectations for my next work would be really high, so high that I knew that no matter what I did, I felt like people would be underwhelmed.

If you played "UNDERTALE," I don't think I can make anything that makes you feel "that way" again.

However, it's possible I can make something else.

It's just something simple but maybe you'll like it.

See you in ?? years... OK?

Don't forget.
