Streets of Rage 4 officially announced
It’s been decades since the last proper Streets of Rage, but it looks like we’re finally getting a fourth entry in the iconic beat ‘em up franchise from Lizardcube, Guard Crush Games, and Dotemu. The current market appetite for retro style gameplay and nostalgia no doubt plays a large part in the timing of this release, as we haven't heard from the franchise since 1994's Streets of Rage 3 for the Sega Genesis.
There’s not a lot of detailed gameplay shown off in the trailer, but we do see the unique hand drawn art style of Lizardcube in full force, similar to their previous release, Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap. According to Dotemu’s description, Streets of Rage 4, “builds upon the classic trilogy’s gameplay with new mechanics, a fresh story and a gauntlet of dangerous stages with a serious crime problem.”
Sounds like they get it.
Streets of Rage was a fairly straight forward 2D beat ‘em up franchise first released on the Genesis in 1991, but stood out from the crowded competition due to the exceptional music composed by Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima. The distinct sound took full advantage of the Genesis sound chip in a way few other games had before, and has aged remarkably well.
We know Streets of Rage 4 is coming, but we don’t know for which platforms, or an exact release date.
We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
