State of Decay 2 will include co-op and a persistent online world

During its E3 press conference, Microsoft revealed State of Decay 2, the sequel to Undead Labs’ sleeper hit zombie survival game State of Decay. Unlike its predecessor, which was an offline single-player experience, State of Decay 2 will allow players to group up as they struggle to survive in a persistent online world.

In the below reveal trailer, one group of survivors fires off a distress flare, and another group in the distance sees it and sets out to help the first group. According to Microsoft, that flare is more than just a cool trailer detail, it will actually serve as a matchmaking mechanic in the game itself:

"The flare you saw in the trailer is actually the matchmaking mechanic. You can be playing, and if you start to become overwhelmed, you can shoot off your flare. That signals to other players that you need help."

Similar to an MMO, State of Decay 2 players will explore a shared online persistent game world. If you’d rather not brave the game’s dangers alone, you’ll be able to form parties of up to four people and explore cooperatively.

State of Decay 2 is set to be released for both Xbox One and PC in 2017.
