Spookytacular 2020: Five more horror icons we want in Dead by Daylight

When it launched four years ago, Dead by Daylight included a lot of original killers, with some of them loosely based on slasher movie villains. Since then, developer Behaviour Interactive has added an ever-growing roster of licensed killers — a few of which we mentioned in a previous list of horror characters we wanted to see — including Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, and the Demogorgon from Stranger Things.

With frequent content updates, new characters, and even a graphical upgrade, it’s obvious Dead by Daylight is here to stay for a very long time. The question is often asked: What other licensed killers will we see in the game? Well, here’s our list of five more horror icons we want to see in Dead by Daylight.

Pumpkinhead

At its core, Pumpkinhead is a Demon of Vengeance and can be summoned by someone who’s been wronged and wants to exact revenge on others for their transgressions. First appearing in the 1988 film Pumpkinhead, the titular demon won’t stop chasing after its victims until it carries out the original summoner’s retribution.

While most of the survivors in Dead by Daylight don’t exactly come off as deserving of punishment, there’s no denying how terrifying it would be if Pumpkinhead were to give unrelenting chase. And because this creature won’t stop until its deeds are fulfilled, it would truly live up to the game’s tagline of “death is not an escape.”

Jack Torrance

In The Shining, Jack Torrance’s descent into madness was the result of a perfect storm of events. A recovering alcoholic struggling with writer’s block, the combination of cabin fever and, well, a hotel haunted by a bunch of ghosts drove ol’ Jackie boy to insanity. The ax-wielding maniac went after his wife and kid, chasing them throughout the hotel and even a claustrophobic hedge maze.

Just imagine hearing that signature heartbeat when you’re within Jack’s terror radius. You hear him say, “Heeere’s Johnny!” and turn around to see him running at you with his ax. Also, while his famous catchphrase is undoubtedly iconic, I’ve always been more partial to, “I’m not gonna hurt ya. I’m just gonna bash your brains in.” Speaking of which, maybe bashing in survivors’ brains in can be Jack Torrance’s Memento Mori kill.

Freddy Fazbear

Dead by Daylight is almost Cabin in the Woods-like in the way it combines so many horror universes. The game’s lineup of killers extended beyond film and into gaming earlier this year with the appearance of Pyramid Head from Silent Hill, proving that no character is off-limits. Could that mean Freddy Fazbear from Five Nights at Freddy’s is in the cards? It would certainly be cool — and creepy.

The epitome of a jump scare monster, Freddy is a killer animatronic that comes to life at a creepy pizza place after hours. The red-eyed, hat-wearing monstrosity and his gang of robotic pals have one goal in mind: to stuff people inside of them. Yeah, running around Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria in the dark, trying to avoid death by animatronic stuffing would be fittingly terrifying in Dead by Daylight.

Candyman

Released in 1992 as the initial slasher craze was winding down, Candyman became a hit due to its creepy imagery and gore. The film has since gained even more traction due to its social commentary, and there’s even a new film coming out soon. The renewed interest in Candyman makes it the perfect time for the hook-handed victim-turned-villain to make his Dead by Daylight debut. Bonus points if Behaviour Interactive gets the likeness and voice of Tony Todd!

Candyman would fit right in with the rest of the murderers in Dead by Daylight thanks to his tall, imposing size and physical traits. Aside from having a hook for a hand, Candyman’s ribcage is exposed and covered in bees. This makes for a grotesque, haunting form — rest assured, it would be eerie seeing him appear from behind the fog as you’re trying your damnedest to fix a generator and escape the housing projects of Cabrini Green.

Nemesis

It’s time for the Resident Evil franchise to have its Dead by Daylight moment. While Mr. X may have a large following, Nemesis from Resident Evil 3 is ultimately the more iconic character. His look is straight out of a big-budget horror movie, and because he functions like somewhat of a more powerful Mr. X, there’s really no contest here.

From his sharp teeth to his stylish trenchcoat, Nemesis is massive, intimidating, and above all, scary as hell. Plus, if included, it would be interesting to see Jill Valentine and Carlos Oliveira in more of a victim role.

Honorable Mention (Again): Screw It, Just Give Us Jason Vorhees

We included Jason Vorhees in our previous Dead by Daylight wish list, and that’s because simply put, he would be an awesome addition to the game. Due to legal issues, the Friday the 13th franchise is in limbo, and content plans for Friday the 13th: The Game have come to a halt. As such, it would probably be tricky to get Jason in the game — if not virtually impossible at this point.

With so many horror movie favorites from franchises like Halloween, Saw, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and A Nightmare on Elm Street already in Dead by Daylight, Jason Vorhees is pretty much the missing piece of the bloody puzzle. It’s time for Mrs. Vorhees’ baby boy to rise from Crystal Lake and roam the grounds in search of new victims.
