Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey cast as Joel and Ellie for The Last of US TV series
Pre-production for The Last of Us TV series for HBO continues to move forward with the latest development being the casting for the lead roles of Joel and Ellie. Last night multiple reports confirmed Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, Narcos, Game of Thrones) would take the role of Joel, while 17-year-old Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones, His Dark Materials), would portray Ellie.
Most people remember Ramsey for portraying Lady Lyanna Mormont, the young pre-teen leader of Bear Island, in Game of Thrones. The character and actor immediately became fan favorites because of the portrayal of a young lady who was tough, honest, and took no B.S. from anyone. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news on the casting.
In The Last of Us, Ellie is a 14-year old orphan whose DNA has the key to saving the world. Joel is hired to smuggle Ellie out of a quarantined zone and must make a months-long trek across a dangerous post-apocalyptic United States filled with infected creatures and roaming gangs.
For those who forgot about Lyanna Mormont, here’s a quick refresher:
Throughout the week, there were rumors that Mahershala Ali (Luke Cage, True Detective, Moonlight) was in consideration for the role of Joel, but that ultimately went to Pedro Pascal. Deadline broke the news of the casting.
There’s no word on when production will begin on the show, but the pilot episode will be directed by Kantemir Balagov and written by Craig Mazin (who also wrote the upcoming Borderlands movie), and the game’s writer Neil Druckmann.
