Valve plays whack a mole with AI games

Game devs confirm that Valve is cracking down on AI assets

Valve has been out here making big moves against AI-generated content recently. Developers have been telling on themselves when they share the rejections from Valve. But, Valve is sticking with its strict stance for now.

Around a month ago, a game dev on Reddit going by u/potterharry97 showed off a rejection letter that they got from Steam. They had created a game that had, in their own words, “fairly obviously AI generated” assets.

The Reddit user shared both rejection letters that they received. The first one told them that they needed to remove all AI-generated content. “If you fail to remove all such content,” the letter explains at the end, “we will not be able to ship your game on Steam, and this app will be banned.”

The developer didn’t bother to necessarily remove AI-generated aspects, but claimed to improve the pieces by hand so that “there were no longer any obvious signs of AI”.

A second rejection letter came over a full week later. The dev explains that they usually only take a couple days for a verdict, so being a full week is abnormal. The letter was concise, explaining that there’s no way to know if the AI stole art or not. The wording they used was that “it’s unclear if the underlying AI tech used to create the assets has sufficient rights to the training data”.

They, then, offered a rare refund for the App Credits used to publish games on Steam.

Late last week, Jake Birkett, owner of Gray Alien Games, revealed that “it’s not just art, it’s text too” over on Twitter. Although the tech to detect AI text is hit-or-miss in 2023, Valve is trying to look out for artists and writers alike.

While AI use in the development of games is an inevitability, the problem comes down to the newness of the technology. In its current state, AI cannot be fully trusted still to not pull from other artists or writers to design what it deems as “something new”.

While this type of tech has all the hallmarks of eventually becoming a tool used across the board, AI is still really in its infancy. Nothing really beats the creativity of a human, in any case. But, AI tools will eventually be in every toolbox.
