Mortal Kombat 11 DLC Characters possibly leaked via Switch datamine

The release of Mortal Kombat 11 is upon us and, unfortunately, Warner Bros. has their hands full. A number of retailers appear to have broken street date and copies of the game have made it out into the wild. With them, hundreds of YouTube uploads of everything from the story to customization options.

While Warner Bros. continues to try to plug the leaks, the biggest leak just hit via a dataminer on Reddit. Supposedly, all the future DLC for Mortal Kombat 11 has been leaked through strings found in the source code of the Switch version.

While sometimes leaks like this could be a huge scam, LeoNatan, the dataminer in question, has provided step by step instructions for anyone with access to MK11 on the Switch to verify his findings, and sure enough it has been verified by multiple independent sources. So it’s looking rather plausible, but even so these are just strings. There is no data, like character models, to be found. So Netherrealm could change their mind, could include more DLC than this, or could have included these as a red herring. That being said, these DLC characters seem more than plausible, so let’s take a look.

Shang Tsung

As you can see, the first DLC character is Shang Tsung which lines up with Netherrealm’s official announcements. It’s worth noting that Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, who portrayed Shang Tsung in the Mortal Kombat movie will be voicing him in the game. That’s a nice little blast of nostalgia.

Up next is Joker, and while many of you might be excited from Persona 5’s Joker showing up in Smash, this is most likely the DC universe Joker, as a tie-in to Netherrealm’s Injustice series. Mortal Kombat DLC characters need to be a certain degree of violent. They need to be comfortable with being portrayed being chopped up and gored and the Joker is probably one of the only DC characters that crosses that threshold of violence.

Nightwolf is a classic Mortal Kombat character that hasn’t had an active story role in many modern day Mortal Kombats. Still he is a fan favorite and it’s obvious that some Mortal Kombat characters will make the roster as DLC. They can’t all be guest characters.

Terminator is a classic violent movie character which Mortal Kombat has a history of including as guest characters. What’s interesting here is that we don’t know what type of Terminator will be included in the game. Will they have the rights to use Arnold Schwarzenegger’s likeness? Or will they simply include a random T-800 without a human skin, possibly as a replacement for Moral Kombat’s vast array of cyber ninjas? We will have to wait and see.

Sindel is another classic MK character who hasn’t had much time to shine in modern day MK games. However, she was an extremely important character in the story if Mortal Kombat 3 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is largely considered the best classic MK title by the MK fandom.

Next we have Spawn, a classic comic book character who hasn’t seen much video game representation since his guest appearance in Soul Calibur II. However, fans have been asking for a Spawn appearance in a Mortal Kombat game ever since it was clear that guest characters were an option. It’s nice to think that their wish was finally granted.

It’s interesting to note that that covers six DLC characters and as of yet we only have confirmation of one six character DLC “Kombat Pack.” Judging by these leaks, it appears as if a few DLC characters are stragglers. It’s possible that they will be offered individually as particularly special DLC characters (this is especially likely for guest characters), or Netherrealm can be planning a Kombat Pack 2. However, there aren’t enough characters to fill out another six character Kombat Pack in this leak, so this might point toward the existence of other DLC characters not on this list.

Ash is an interesting name to have on a DLC list. This most likely refers to Ash Williams from the Evil Dead series, a classic gory action-horror schlock fest.

Fujin is a character that was integrated into the Mortal Kombat roster after the series went 3D post Mortal Kombat 4. While he was never a fan-favorite character, the story of Mortal Kombat 11 appears to focus on the gods more so than any other MK game. Fujin, being the god of wind and (according to one of his endings) eventual protector of Earthrealm seems like a natural fit for the game’s roster. It’s also worth noting that Fujin made appearances in MK9 and MKX but never as a playable character.

Sheeva, on the other hand, is another fan-favorite character and the only female Shokan to ever grace the game’s roster. Without Goro or Kintaro in the roster, she would be a fine representative of the Shokan race.

Aside from characters it appears as if MK11 will also have a variety of stage and story DLC. There is also an entry for a “GOTY” DLC entry, which perhaps points toward

Once again it’s worth noting that this list should be taken with a grain of salt. While this data is real and verifiable, Netherrealm has a history of including red herrings in their game code. Injustice 2 had the infamous “Celebrimbor” bait and switch, for example. We won’t know if any of these leaks are legitimate until Netherrealm themselves confirms or denies them.

Until then, it’s fun to think about.

So what do you think? Are these leaks real or are they just another way for Netherrealm to screw with us? Let us know in the comments.
