Monster Hunter, Disgaea, Ori and everything else shown during Nintendo’s September Direct Mini Partner Showcase

These new Nintendo Direct Mini’s are becoming a monthly affair, and this time fans can’t even complain when we don’t hear anything about major NES titles, because we just had the Mario 35th anniversary direct! Of course, that means Nintendo is going to have to work hard to wow us, with all those upcoming Mario titles coming out, not to mention next-gen consoles coming out in less than two months! What does the big N have to show us today?

Monster Hunter: Rise

The Switch always seemed a step behind when it came to Monster Hunter titles, what with Monster Hunter: World being the latest installment which just never got a Switch release. Instead, it will be getting a much faster-paced cinematic Monster Hunter called Monster Hunter: Rise, with a unique Japanese aesthetic. It will release for the Switch on March 26, 2021. You can order the Deluxe Edition, which comes with four gestures, a samurai pose set, a kabuki face paint set, and a hairstyle, along with three armor pieces, and people who pre-order will receive a Palamute retriever costume armor, a Palico Forest Cat costume armor, and a Novice Talisman which will give you bonuses in the early game.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin

It sure is a Monster Hunter sort of direct. Yet another Monster Hunter title takes the traditional Monster Hunter gameplay and turns it into something more cutesy and anime-styled. It even seems to have some Pokémon vibes with a few scenes of monster battling. The whole story seems to revolve around a Rathalos egg that you seem to be charged with protecting. This new, more traditional spin on Monster Hunter will hit Summer 2021.

Fitness Boxing 2: Rhythm and Exercise

There is a sequel to Fitness Boxing, and before you laugh, Switch fitness titles like Ring Fit have actually been fairly well-received while we are all stuck inside aching for physical activity. This one turns the act of exercise boxing into a rhythm game, which is a pretty decent mashup of genres. And, of course, you can customize your instructor's outfit. Everything needs a costume system these days. Fitness Boxing 2: Rhythm & Exercise will be available for purchase on December 4, and pre-orders are available now.

Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny

Wow, the newest Disgaea was announced first for a Nintendo platform, for the first time ever. This used to be a Sony darling. In Disgaea 6 you play as Zed, a zombie demon who becomes stronger each time he dies. The whole game has gone polygonal now, forsaking its old sprite-based look. Notable characters like Laharl also make a return. Max damage is now in the quadrillions and it appears as if the maximum level is 99,999,999. Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny will release in exclusively on Switch in Summer 2021.

Disgaea 5 Complete

Just in case you missed the previous Disgaea you can now play it for free, provided that you are a Nintendo Switch Online member. From 9/23 10 a.m. PST to 9/29 11:59 p.m. PST, you can download and play through the entire thing.

Empire of Sin

Run your own criminal empire in Empire of Sin, bringing together rival gangs and challenging major names like the great Al Capone. You can pre-order the game to get an exclusive mission and gangster. Unfortunately, a release date was not given.

Sniper Elite 4: Italia

The Switch is trying to show that it can be a serious shooter console with this new post-WW2 title. It hops platforms to the Switch this holiday 2020.

The Sizzle Reel

Nintendo gave us a quick round-robin look at a few new (mostly indie) titles including:

  • The Long Dark – an exploration survival game that has you brave a frozen apocalypse available now
  • PGA Tour 2K21 – The next installment in what is basically the only pro golf game out there. A physical version will be available on September 25.
  • Hades – Supergiant’s Diablo-style rogue-lite finally comes to the Switch, later today.

Balan Wonderworld

Hey, it’s that game made by the Sonic guys and published by Square Enix. What a combo. This is a fairly standard collect-a-thon platformer with mechanics based around costumes that give you special abilities. The big catch, there are more than 80 costumes to find, which means 80 different power-ups! In addition, there is a two-player co-op mode for anyone who wants to bring along a friend. Balan Wonderworld will be available on Switch on March 26, 2021.

Rune Factory 5

Yep, this Harvest Moon spin-off is getting another installment on Switch. Plant crops, sell items, date townsfolk, and do all the other things you love in farming sims, but also wield a sword and kill some monsters, in traditional JRPG style. In addition, this installment of Rune Factory gives you access to new combination attacks… with the same people you maybe dating. It will be available in 2021.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Nintendo closed their direct by showing one of Microsoft’s major exclusives hopping over to a new platform. You will be able to play this critically acclaimed sequel…now! Go get it! A physical collector’s edition including both Ori’s, a steelbook case, and artbook is available for pre-order now.
