Injustice 2 could have DLC guest characters and movie tie-in skins
When NetherRealm released the original Injustice: Gods Among Us back in 2013, it just couldn’t resist adding a little Mortal Kombat flavor to the pot by making one of the game’s four DLC characters a special “Injustice” version of Mortal Kombat’s iconic undead ninja Scorpion. That “guest character” trend continued in Mortal Kombat X with the addition of iconic film horrors Jason Voorhees, Leatherface, Predator, and Alien. Now, it sounds like game director Ed Boon is open to keeping the trend going in next year’s Injustice 2.
Speaking with Game Informer, Boon talked about how, while some players are disappointed when they see a DLC character slot go to a guest character (instead of a universe-appropriate character who didn’t make the original roster cut), most players love getting to duke it out with these fighters from other universes:
"I always think there’s a novelty to it and there’s a certain amount of people who think that when they see a guest character that it took the slot of a DC character that they wanted to have. But you know, Scorpion in Injustice was the most downloaded of all the characters. There was a coolness and a novelty factor to seeing the mixing of the things. Alien and Predator in Mortal Kombat X were the most downloaded of those, so I would be surprised if we didn’t do any of that."
Boon also touched upon the subject of implementing DLC character skins which were based off of DC movies and television. Injustice included a DLC skin for Green Arrow which was themed around the character’s appearance in the CW show Arrow (actor Stephen Amell even came in and voiced his own lines for the skin), as well as DLC skins for Superman and General Zod which were based on their appearances in the Man of Steel film. According to Boon, he’d very much like to implement similar skins in Injustice 2:
"We would love to. We haven’t made any kind of concrete things; the game doesn’t come out until 2017, but I think it would be a missed opportunity if we didn’t do like a Wonder Woman movie skin or something like that."
Injustice 2 is set to launch sometime in 2017 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
