Infographic: How does the size of Star Citizen compare to other titles?
Star Citizen needs no introduction.
Fans of the flight simulator genre have rejoiced since the game debuted on Kickstarter and many of them have also speculated about hardware requirements. While Oculus’ recent announcement of hardware requirements made us realize we would need an about-average gaming PC to run Star Citizen in VR, nothing prepared us for what game developer Jeremy Masker recently wrote on the Roberts Space Industries forum:
“The game compression and asset removal is unlikely to yield such high gains that we will be able to reduce our client size to 30-40GB. The size and number of assets that are left to deliver means that our client size is much more likely to be 100GB.”
That’s right, Star Citizen will require a whopping 100GB of free drive space just to install on your PC. To put that number in perspective, that’s exactly the same amount of space required to install Grand Theft Auto V and The Witcher 3 combined.
If you have an extra 100GB to spare, you can also install all 10 of the most popular video game titles on Steam.

The increased file size of recent games is most likely attributed to the demand of better resolutions. And as the price of good monitors, GPUs, and SSDs continue to drop, we can only expect this demand to grow even more - along with the file sizes of video games.
