Fighting Game News: How plausible are these Street Fighter V, Marvel Vs. Capcom rumors?

Who has to wait for official announcements when you can just scour the internet for leaks and rumors? In the past week a mysterious informant has supposedly revealed all sorts of information about upcoming fighters. Before you wave him away as an internet nut-job, he did correctly predict that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would be joining Injustice 2. Oh did we mention that? Yeah, there were also some legitimate character reveals in the last few weeks as well, and even more will be coming up in the future.

Rumor #1 – Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition

The Rumor: Season 3 characters will include Sagat, Sakura, Cody, Sodom, and two newcomers. The official “Arcade Edition” update will include Crimson Viper, Q, Necro, and Oro as free characters as well. Arcade Edition will also include a color edit mode though netcode fixes will not be implemented until Season 4 due to problems with the Unreal Engine 4.

Plausibility (4/10): On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being never happening and 10 being definite, this leak has a medium-low plausibility. Color Edit mode certainly isn’t that strange of a feature to add, considering we already saw it in Street Fighter X Tekken. Delayed netcode fixes also make a certain degree of sense, though guaranteeing a Season 4 of Street Fighter V is pushing it.

The characters are what really kill this leak. First of all, I sincerely doubt Capcom would just give away four free characters. Second of all, if they did give away free characters they wouldn’t make three of them characters from Street Fighter III. They would include a variety of characters to appeal to the largest audience. The supposed “season three” list is also very unlikely. While many fans are asking for Sagat and Sakura, filling the rest of the roster with Final Fight characters seems more like a personal wishlist than anything in the realm of plausibility. All in all, there may be some truth to this rumor, but don’t count on it.

Rumor #2 – Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite

The Rumor: Season 2 will consist of Star-Lord, Ms. Marvel, Asura, Gill, Lady, and one further Capcom character, possibly Regina or Apollo Justice. Characters that are in development to some extent (some just as a pitch) include Star-Lord, Ms. Marvel, Green Goblin, Wolverine, Cyclops, Psylocke, Magneto, Storm, Deadpool, Doctor Doom, Daredevil, Asura, Lady, Gill, Rashid, Captain Commando, Nina, Deis, Regina, Gene, Vergil, Akuma, and Apollo Justice. Deadpool, Wolverine, Daredevil, Akuma, Gene, and Vergil will be added as a free Summer 2018 update. Four player 2v2 mode will be introduced in a season 2 update. A tournament mode will also be added, as well as a playable Ultron-Sigma. A new story mode will be announced at SDCC 2018. The end goal for the roster is 58-60 characters.

Plausibility (1/10): There is just no way that this is going to happen, primarily for one reason: characters. The characters here are little more than a wish list. Star-Lord is plausible but strange considering there are already two Guardians of the Galaxy characters on the roster. Ms. Marvel is very plausible considering Captain Marvel is one of their poster characters. Gill could work, but he has been leaked several times in the past and none of those leaks turned out to be true. Lady would be a neat inclusion, but there’s no reason to include her over Trish, which Capcom already has models and animations for. Regina from Dino Crisis would be a neat inclusion but I doubt they would include her over other Capcom fan favorites, since few remember who she is. Finally Apollo Justice has no reason to be a part of the game when, once again, they already have a model and animation for Phoenix Wright.

And that’s just the first batch of characters. Some characters like Gene and Deis might appeal to Capcom fanboy like myself, but the public has no idea who they are. Do you know who they are? They are from Godhand and Breath of Fire respectively. Did you even know Godhand existed? The chances of Capcom building up new assets for long dead franchises like this are slim to none.

Then there’s the suggestion that we are going to be getting a free update that will include characters like Wolverine and Deadpool and while I think this would be the best way for Capcom to draw new players into the game, there’s no way they are releasing a pack of six characters, two of which requiring completely new assets, without charging for it.

A new story mode would be too expensive to make, the game moves too fast for four player 2v2, and while a tournament mode would be neat, the game already functions perfectly well in e-sports contexts. This leak is all just the dream of a fanboy. I would have given it a 0/10 plausibility rating except so many characters were mentioned there is a chance that by sheer randomness, one of them might actually get into the game.

Rumor #3 – Dragon Ball FighterZ

The Rumor: Broly, Regular Goku, and Regular Vegeta will be DLC characters at some point in the future. Other possible characters are Bardock, Raditz, and Goku Black. A Nintendo Switch port of the game is in the works, but will release later in 2018.

Plausibility (8/10): Of all the rumors, this one is by far the most plausible. Arc System Works and Bandai Namco have already shown that they are willing to do “clone” characters with the creation of Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Vegeta. Bardock and Raditz seem like obscure character choices but so was Captain Ginyu and he’s been confirmed. Broly is a definite. He’s the character everyone remembers from DBZ movies, and also shoddy M.U.G.E.N. matches. Goku Black is also very likely as he is a main antagonist of Dragon Ball Super. Finally, a Nintendo Switch port of the game is plausible. Blazblue Cross-Tag Battle is coming to the Switch and is similarly designed by Arc System Works. The big question is whether or not the Switch can handle the Unreal 4 Engine that the game runs in.

New Reveal Dates for Blazblue Cross-Tag Battle

The countdown has begun! Arc System Works will be revealing brand new Blazblue Cross-Tag Battle characters on November 17. They also revealed that this will be the very first game that their North American wing will publish.

Injustice 2’s PC Version Gets Sudden Release Date

In a flash (get it) Netherrealm studios released an open beta for Injustice 2 on the 6th, and then closed it after a few short days before releasing the game! The game officially released on November 14 so go pick up one of the best fighting games of this year, and give us some notice next time, Netherrealm. Jeez.

EA Unveils EA Sports UFC 3

It’s not quite a fighting game, but EA has unveiled EA Sports UFC 3, a “Fighting Sports” game. It will feature a new animation system featuring “uninterrupted fighter movement.” It will also feature a fully implemented G.O.A.T. career mode, though details on this mode are still sparse. It will release on February 2, for the Xbox One and PS4.

Injustice 2 Fighter Pack 3 Revealed – Featuring the Ninja Turtles

Netherrealm Studios revealed the fighters in Injustice 2’s latest DLC pack. They will be Atom, Enchantress, and all four Ninja Turtles. The turtles said “we fight as one” in their reveal trailer, meaning they likely will all be controlled as a single character. Oddly enough, these characters still do not seem to correspond with data mined from the game recently, suggesting that Talion and Celebrimbor from the Shadow of Mordor series would be joining the roster. Maybe something for fighter pack 4? Or maybe it was just a code name.

Either way you can pick up these fighters individually or, if you haven’t bought Injustice 2 yet, you can get all DLC fighters by picking up the Ultimate Edition. No details have been given about how these new DLC characters play.

Tekken 7’s Next Guest Character is Noctis from Final Fantasy XV

The latest DLC character for Tekken 7 has been revealed, and nobody could have predicted it. Tekken 7 has already added Geese Howard and Akuma to its roster, so which fighting game is going to be represented next. None! The next guest character is from an RPG, specifically Noctis from Final Fantasy XV.

Noctis’s fighting style perfectly mirrors his Final Fantasy XV incarnation. He can summon a variety of weapons out of thin air, teleport, and even cast magic spells. His reveal trailer shows that he has a few parries, several rush-down oriented juggle strings, and air-combos, something that is a rarity in the Tekken series. Noctis will join the roster in Spring 2018.

That’s all the news and leaks we have for you today. Check back in after some more major reveals coming in the later half of November.
