DC Universe Online’s PlayStation 3 version will shut down in January 2018

Daybreak Games (formerly Sony Online Entertainment) has confirmed that the PlayStation 3 version of its long-running MMO DC Universe Online (also known as DCUO) will be shutting down in January, but players can transfer their accounts over to the PlayStation 4 version if they want to keep playing.

According to Daybreak’s confirmation of the shutdown, it will commence on January 31, 2018. The reason behind the shutdown is so that Daybreak can more easily focus on newer platforms (DCUO is also available on PC and Xbox One in addition to PS3 and PS4). Fortunately, those who have since upgraded to a PlayStation 4 can have their PlayStation 3 progress automatically transferred over by logging into the PlayStation 4 version of DCUO using their same PSN account.

DC Universe Online originally launched for both PlayStation 3 and PC way back in 2011 and it was one of the first MMO titles to be built with both PC and consoles in mind. Since then, the game has seen the release of dozens of expansions and smaller content updates, and it has continued to flourish in recent years thanks to its availability on newer consoles.
