Days Gone: How to find every Nero Research Site
Days Gone is full to the brim with valuable collectibles and supplies that drastically improve your chances of surviving in a brutal post-apocalyptic Oregon.
Nero Research Sites are various secret locations across the map that contain a free Nero Injector and usually some kind of Nero Micro-Recorder or Intel. They’re occasionally frustrating to find and even more frustrating to access, but the Nero Injectors alone are more than worth the trouble.
So, let’s talk about how to find every Nero Research Site in Days Gone, so that you can max out Deacon’s stats and turn him into the zombie slaying beef cake of our dreams.
Cascades Nero Research Site 1
Location: Southeast of O’Leary Mountain Safe House across a bridge
The first Nero Research Site in the Cascades can be found southeast of O’Leary Mountain Safe House west of a small freaker infested lumber yard.
When you find the lumber yard, follow the train tracks leading through the camp west across a large red bridge to find the abandoned Nero Research Site beside the entrance to a blockaded tunnel.
You’ll find the Nero Injector and Recorder in a crate beside the passage, claim them for a quick boost to your core stats and hit the road.
Cascades Nero Research Site 2
Location: Northeast of O’Leary Mountain Safe House in the caves west of the cemetery
The second Cascades Nero Research Site can be found northeast of O’Leary Mountain safe house and west of the cemetery from the opening act of the game.
Your goal is the lava caves exhibit where you first encounter the Nero researchers early in the main story. When you arrive, make your way through the tourist areas to a large wooden staircase on the north side of the exhibit that leads down into the cave system.
Head down the stairs and carefully sneak your way through the cave system until it opens up into a large circular chamber with a red blinking beacon, a Nero Injector, and a bit of Nero intel for your trouble.
Cascades Nero Research Site 3
Location: Southeast of Copeland’s Camp across a stunt jump
The next Nero Research Site on our list can be found by riding Southeast out of Copeland’s Camp and cutting into the various deer paths west of the main road. You’ll know you’ve found it when you catch sight of a wrecked Nero helicopter up on a plateau.
This is where things can be a little tricky. The only way to get to this Nero Research Site is by completing a stunt jump to the west of the plateau. This should be a pretty simple stunt jump, but if you’re having trouble you may need to visit Copeland’s camp to purchase some vehicle upgrades like NOS and a better engine.
Either way, the name of the game is speed and distance. This means you need to line up with the ramp to the west of the plateau and leave plenty of distance to get up to maximum speed. When you’re ready, try to use your NOS in two bursts, once in a short pulse when you first start moving, then the rest a short distance before you hit the jump.
With enough speed and a little luck, you’ll fly over the gap and land beside the chopper, where you’ll find a fresh Nero Injector and Recorder as your prize.
Cascades Nero Research Site 4
Location: Inside the White King Mine
This next Nero Research Site can be found at White King Mine in the sparse section of forest on the northwestern edge of the Cascades.
You’re looking for the entrance to an old mining tunnel with a set of railroad tracks leading deep within. When you get close to the tunnel, keep your eyes peeled for the sound of the horde that makes its home in the area.
How you approach the White King Mine is up to you, but either way you’re going to need to be aware of the horde’s presence either patrolling the area or when it’s nesting inside the mine itself.
If you’re interested in tackling the horde head on, it’s worth approaching the mine in the day –on the off chance that you’ll find the horde sleeping within. This gives you a chance to take advantage of the choke point at the entrance of the mine to funnel the freakers into your waiting traps and molotovs.
Otherwise, you can usually find the horde patrolling the area around the mine at night. This is a prime time to engage the horde in the open, or to allow you to sneak into the mine undetected while the horde is away from home.
Either way, you’ll find the Nero Research Site a few hundred meters down the tracks leading into the mine. You should see the red glow of the Nero beacon almost immediately, which will lead you to your usual reward of Nero Injector and Intel.
Belknap Nero Research Site 1
Location: Through a cave Northeast of Hot Springs Camp
The Next Nero Research Site can only be found by heading northwest out of the Hot Springs Encampment to the smaller of two lakes to the north.
On the southwestern edge of the lake you’ll find the mouth to a large cave. Prepare for a bit of a subterranean hike and head down into the cave itself.
Stay to the left as you progress down the tunnel and you’ll find yourself covering a decent amount of ground. Don’t stress about the distance, because you’re essentially walking under a mountain, just follow the tunnel until you catch sight of a glowing red beacon and claim your Nero Injector and Recorder from the research site up ahead.
Belknap Nero Research Site 2
Location: West of Hot Springs across a stunt jump
This Nero Research Site requires completing another stunt jump to a downed Nero Helicopter on an otherwise unreachable cliffside.
The stunt jump in question can be found directly west of the Hot Springs encampment just beyond the resort and the main road. You should be able to spot the downed helicopter from the road.
Otherwise, keep your eyes peeled for a distinct split in the hillside west of the road that looks suspiciously like a ramp. Use the nearby road to build up some speed and burn through your NOS to boost over the gap.
This should be a relatively easy jump overall, but if you don’t have at least a second level engine you might struggle to get across. If that’s the case, you’ll need to spend some time completing missions for Copeland or Iron Mike to get your hands on the parts you need.
Once you clear the jump the Nero Research Site is yours to explore for the customary chunk of Intel and a shiny new Nero Injector.
Iron Butte Nero Research Site
Location: Just southeast of Ripper resort, right next to Redwood RV Park
The next Nero Research Site on our list is southeast of the Redwood RV Park Ambush Camp in Iron Butte. You won’t have many opportunities to explore this area until about mid-way through the story, but when it becomes available, you’ll find most of the important landmarks on the southwestern edge of the region.
From the remains of the main ripper base in Iron Butte, head south along the roads out of town into the forested region between the waterline and the small group of buildings on the southeastern edge of the region.
Bear west at any forks in the road and you should come across the Redwood RV Park ambush camp a few hundred meters south from a dam. Just before you roll into the ambush camp, cut to the southeast between two sections of forest and take some time to get familiar with the area.
Reaching this Nero Checkpoint requires another stunt jump across a break in the ridge on the south side of this clearing. It’s a pretty decent gap, but manageable if you start from the road and then pour on the NOS a short distance before you hit the jump.
Once you make it across, you’re free to loot the crashed helicopter for a Nero Injector and the various bodies along the ridge for another piece of Nero intel.
Lost Lake Nero Research Site 1
Location: Northeast of Iron Mike’s Farms
The first Nero Research Site in the Lost Lake region can be found just northeast of Iron Mike’s Farm on the very far northeastern edge of the region.
This Nero Research Site doesn’t have any fancy stunt jumps or challenging enemies, all you have to do is roll up and claim a free Nero Injector from the box on the ridge.
Lost Lake Nero Research Site 2
Location: Southeast of the Lost Lake Encampment across a stunt jump
You’ll find this Nero Research Site southeast of the Lost Lake Encampment between the Deerborn Ambush Camp and the Old Sawmill Nero Checkpoint.
This Nero Research Site is locked behind a difficult but incredibly cool stunt jump just a little north of the ridge with the Helicopter.
This jump can be a doozy, so make sure you have the best engine and NOS you can afford from the Lost Lakes Encampment. When you’re ready, get up to speed on the main road and then bear right towards the stunt jump. Be ready to empty your NOS just before you hit the ramp to max out your speed and you should cruise right across the gap.
Once you’re across, climb up the ridge and clear any freakers in the area before looting the camp and the helicopter for the usual Nero Injector and Intel.
Crater Lake Nero Research Site 1
Location: South of Wizard Island, just west of the southern entrance
Aside from a small number of freakers you may need to slice through on the way, this Nero Research Site is a straightforward affair.
You’re looking for a small group of houses just south and a little west from Wizard Island. There’s various junk in the area to loot, but your prize is inside the main two-story home.
Head inside and you’ll find a Nero Injector and Recorder waiting for you in the kitchen behind the stairs.
Crater Lake Nero Research Site 2
Location: Just south and a little west of Wizard Island
Our next Nero Research Site can be found southwest of Wizard Island in the Dead Coyote Caves.
The easiest way to find this site is to just head south out of the Wizard Island encampment and then follow the main road west around the shore of Crater Lake. Follow the main road until you reach a major intersection and bear left. Then follow the road and the signage to Dead Coyote Caves just ahead.
Once you arrive, deal with the various wolves and freakers in the area before heading into the cave itself to find the usual Nero Injector and micro-recorder on a desk behind the waterfall.
Crater Lake Nero Research Site 3
Location: Northwest of Diamond Lake Encampment in a cave
The next Nero Research Site can be found during the “A Good Soldier” story mission that sends you northwest of the Diamond Lake Encampment to find a test kit.
When you arrive, make your way around to the right side of the mining complex to find a small plateau that you can climb. Follow the path and climb up a few more ridges to find a secret entrance to the mine above the town itself.
Crawl under the boards into the mine and you should immediately catch sight of the red glow of a Nero beacon. Trace your way back to the glow and you’re free to claim a pile of Nero themed goodies for your trouble.
Crater Lake Nero Research Site 4
Location: West of Diamond Lake Encampment on a ridge
This next Nero Research Site can be found directly west of the Diamond Lake encampment just below the snowline.
Keep your eyes peeled and hug the edge of the cliffs as you move steadily south down the mountain range and you should spot the black tar and filth of a group of freakers making a nest in the area.
Follow the black goop and gore up the hill and a cave will open on your right. Instead of heading inside the cave itself, continue running up the hill and you’ll find the Nero Research Site along with a small camp a few yards up the path.
Loot the Nero Injector and the other supplies in the area before hitting the road.
Crater Lake Nero Research Site 5
Location: Island on the southeastern shore of Crater Lake
Our next Nero Injector can be found by taking a trip down to the island on the southeastern coast of Crater Lake. Head south out of Wizard Lake and follow the highway east along the coast until you find a small dirt trail leading down to the island.
At this point, you’ll need to take a good long look at the small stone ramp at the edge of the water. This is yet another stunt jump you’ll need to nail if you want to make it to the Nero research site on the island.
It’s best to take this jump by starting from the top of the hill or even by getting up to speed on the main road to the southeast if you think you can handle your bike down the narrow path. As usual you’ll need a decent engine and a quality NOS system to make it across this gap. If you’re having trouble, do some favors for Diamond Lake Camp to the northwest and you should be able to afford the engine you need in no time.
It’s important to note that Deacon has a hell of a time with any kind of water source in this game and he can’t swim far enough to make it across this gap on his own.
As a result, you need to make sure that you clear the water when you make the jump with your bike. If your bike gets stuck in the lake, Deacon won’t be able to swim back across and you’ll be forced to load a save to return to shore, which also resets your progress for collecting the supplies on the Island.
It’s a bear of a jump but focus on using your NOS to build up speed before you hit the stone ramp and you should clear it with just a few inches to spare.
Once you’re on the other side you’re free to claim your Nero Injector and Recorder from the research site. The only problem now is getting back across, which requires another stunt jump off a stone ramp on the west side of the island. You’ll need as much room as possible to make it across so take the time to carefully back up and position your bike as far back from the ramp as possible before pouring on the gas.
Highway 97 Nero Research Site 1
Location: Just south of Aspen Butte Ambush Camp, east of Crater Lake.
You’ll find this Nero Research Site directly west of Wizard Island in the mountains between Aspen Butte Ambush Camp and a small town built into the cliffside.
You’re looking for the entrance to a cave, which can be found by following the small road heading southwest out of the Aspen Butte Ambush Camp.
Follow the cave a short distance until it opens into a large circular chamber where you’ll find a glowing red beacon along with the usual Nero Injector and intel.
Highway 97 Nero Research Site 2
Location: Northwest of Chemult Community College along the river
You can find Nero Research Site in a cave along the river between Chemult Community College and the Cascade Lakes Rail Line Infestation.
The cave itself is pretty hard to miss thanks to the freaker residue in the area, but if you’re having trouble, we recommend following the dirt roads on the west bank of the river steadily north until you spy the entrance to the cave on your left.
Head inside and you’ll find the Nero injector on a box of crates towards the back of the cave.
Highway 97 Nero Research Site 3
Location: Southeast of Wizard Island, southwest of Chemult Community College
The next Nero Research Site can be found in the southwestern corner of the Highway 97 region, a long ride southwest from Chemult Community College deep into some heavily infested freaker territory.
This Nero Research Site is tucked away underneath a bridge just west of the Bare Creek Ambush Camp. As a result, aside from the hordes wandering the area all you need to do is follow the main road (Highway 97) south until you find a bridge with a bike ramp on each side and a small lake to the north.
Drop down below the bridge and you’ll find a Nero Injector in a crate ready and waiting to turn Deacon into a zombie-slaying beefcake.
Highway 97 Nero Research Site 4
Location: Southeast of Chemult Community College across the river from Highway 97
The final stop on our list is directly southwest of Chemult Community College where the river widens out into a larger lake around the Bare Creek ambush camp.
The Nero helicopter in question is on the eastern bank of the river but can only be accessed by hopping over two stunt jumps, first onto an island slightly to the southwest, and another onto the opposite bank of the river.
The downside is that again, both stunt jumps are over water. This means that if you don’t quite make it across the gap that your bike will sink, and you’ll be stranded on the other side until you load a checkpoint. So, don’t try and make this jump unless you’ve quicksaved appropriately.
The first jump can be found just slightly northwest of the island in the water as part of an old section of road that’s lumped up into a ramp. Line up from a good few hundred meters away and burn your NOS immediately to max out your speed, then just before you hit the jump burn whatever NOS may have regenerated in the meantime.
This should give you the thrust you need to just barely make it over the gap and the water to the island.
The second jump is a small rock outcropping just across the island from where you landed. The trick with this jump is to line up carefully and walk your bike back so far that your rear wheel in almost in the water.
From there, all you can really do is pour on the NOS and pray that you make it across. This jump is technically easier than the first, but it’s also easy to make a mistake because of the close quarters of the island. That said, take your time and you should float across to the final Nero Research site in short order.
You’ll find the usual combination of Nero Recorder and Injector as a reward on a set of crates to the left. When you’re ready, use the ramp to the right of the Nero crates to make it back across the water to the road.
