Cate Blanchett cast as Lilith in upcoming Borderlands movie

Back in February, Lionsgate Films announced they tapped Eli Roth (Hostel, Cabin Fever) to direct its Borderlands film based on a screenplay written by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl, The Last of Us HBO series). Fans of the video game franchise were excited and wondering who could fill in roles of characters like Brick, Mordecai, Roland, and Lilith. Well, we have our first cast announcement.

Lionsgate announced Cate Blanchett will portray Lilith, who will be the lead character in the film, according to Variety. In the film Lilith will retain her magical powers she boasts in the game.

“I’m so lucky to have the amazing Cate Blanchett starring in Borderlands,” Roth said in a statement. “We had the most incredible collaboration together on The House with a Clock in Its Walls, and I believe there’s nothing she can’t do. From drama to comedy and now action, Cate makes every scene sing. Working with her is truly a director’s dream come true, and I feel so fortunate that I get to do it again on an even bigger scale.  Everyone brings their A-game to work with Cate, and I know together we’re going to create another iconic character in her already storied career.”

There’s no word on other casting ideas or a release window for the film.
