Is The Amazing Spider-Man 2 for Xbox One canceled?

For reasons that have yet to be determined, publisher Activision has removed the Xbox One listing of its upcoming web-swinging sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2 from its website.

According to a new report from UK gaming site MCV, Activision is rethinking its plans to release the game on Xbox One but hasn’t offered a clear reason as to why: “We want to inform you that we are revising our release plans for ASM2 on Xbox One. When and whether ASM2 is released on Xbox One is TBD.”

According to MCV, pre-orders for the Xbox One version of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 are still available at many retailers and the Xbox 360 version of the game is still set to launch alongside the Wii U, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, 3DS, and PC versions of April 29.

The conspiracy theories are now swirling among gamers. One idea is since Sony owns the Spider-Man franchise, it's making Activision ice out the Xbox One in an effort to perhaps make the Playstation 4 the only new generation console where the game is available. If that's the case, could the Xbox One version of the game come out after the film's release, once the sales of the game start to slow down? Of course the delay or cancellation of the game could just be as simple as a technical issue, but that'd be difficult to believe as well as any licensing issue since the game is still coming out on Xbox 360.

It’s still too early to tell whether this is simply a delay or a straight up cancellation but the specific targeting of the game’s Xbox One version is still very odd.

We've reached out to Activision for clarification and have yet to hear back.
